PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are working in a correctional or detention environment.
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify risks to maintain and enhance personal safety in a prison.

The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Inmate behaviour.
  • Self defence.
  • Physical environment and risks within a prison.

    1. All safety procedures are followed and applied in accordance with established prison policy and procedures.

    3. Information which impacts on personal safety is identified, evaluated and utilised to ensure safety is maintained.

    4. All inmates are considered to have a health risk and interactions with inmates is on this basis with all health precautions identified and applied in accordance with established prison policy and procedures.

    6. First aid knowledge and skills are maintained to the level required by the organisation.

    1. Changes in institution requirements which impact on personal safety are identified and implemented in accordance with these requirements.

    2. Opportunities to enhance personal safety are identified and implemented in accordance with established procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

    Note: The use of communication techniques and instruments are crucial to create awareness and to maintain personal safety in a prison environment.

    Note: Technology such as two-way radio`s and electronic alarm devices are used to maintain personal safety.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.

    Note: The ability to relate to the correctional environment as a cluster of the criminal justice system within the wider society.

  • This unit standard is intended for but not restricted to workplace assessment. The range statements across the unit standard can be applied according to corrections specific equipment, procedures, and processes.
  • Performance in relation to the elements and performance criteria must comply with current legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Reference to terms, procedures and specifications in this unit standard includes documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out.
  • All work practices shall meet documented corrections quality management requirements, including the documentation of activities, events, and decisions.
