This unit standard is for people who operate mid-range, mainframe, or network fileserver based computer systems People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start up and shut down an enterprise server computer system.
  • Execute procedures.
  • Maintain data for an enterprise server computer system.
  • Perform output operations on an enterprise server computer.

    The performance of all elements is to a standard that is expected in a professional environment.

    "Enterprise Server computer" refers to mid-range, mainframe, or network fileserver based computer systems, where manual operation support is needed.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.

    Glossary of Terms:
  • "Cold" start means starting up the computer from a total shut-down, for instance first thing in the morning or after a major break-down.
  • "Warm" or "Re-boot" means restarting the system software without having switched the computer off.
  • "Boot" up means executing the systems software start-up procedures.
  • "Consumables" relates to the type of output device, for instance, a printer needs paper.
  • "Enterprise server" includes but is not limited to traditional "mainframe" computer environments, also sometimes referred to as multi-user computer systems. It covers central enterprise environments where computers need to be started up, add-on devices (like tape drives) need to be loaded and specific procedures need to be run at regular intervals as part of the standard operating of the environment. It is environments where these tasks cannot be automated and need the necessary physical operator support.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because of the acquisition of abroad knowledge base, employee a range of specialised skills, evaluate information using it to plan and develop investigative strategies and to determine solutions to a variety of unpredicted problems and operate in a range of varied and specific contexts.
