PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for housing consumers who enter into contractual agreements with various parties. Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to critically analyse the various housing contracts before they sign.

In order to apply this unit standard, it is assumed that learners are able to read and write to a level appropriate for NQF Level 1.

  • Given that this standard is at NQF Level 1 and could form part of a learner`s General Education and Training Certificate, some of the assessment evidence must be in a form related to competence in reading and writing at this level.
  • At this level, learners are expected to be familiar with the most commonly used forms of legal documentation.
  • Assessment evidence should be gathered in the real-life application of the outcomes in the housing process where possible (e.g. learners` own contracts). If this is not feasible in terms of the learner`s own involvement, or his/her availability to the assessor over time, simulations, role-plays, interviews, portfolios and tests can be used.
  • Translation and interpreting services should be used if these are needed.
