This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to use sound delay techniques with specific types of equipment. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Learners should have attained the outcomes of NQF Level 3 outcomes regarding mathematics, literacy, computers and music in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, before embarking on learning towards this Unit Standard (since this Unit Standard builds on these competencies). Life Skills level 2 is recommended. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Three methods of creating a delay or echo effect is to be mastered. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Identify and evaluate equipment used for delay effects. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Input signal gain control is identified and evaluated to ensure attainment of required levels |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Pre-set selection is identified and evaluated to ensure required sound |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Output gain control is identified and evaluated to determine level |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Delay time control is identified and evaluated to determine the time between delays |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Feedback gain is identified and evaluated to determine the number of delay repeats |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
High pass and low pass filters are identified and evaluated to determine frequency cut-offs |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Select specified delay effect types to produce required sound. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
A mono delay is selected appropriate to required repeated delays |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Vocal doubling effect is selected for required voicing simulation |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
A common echo is selected to simulate the required effects |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Stereo delay with independent delay time parameters is selected to create rhythmic delays |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Stereo delay with automatic panning is selected to create a moving stereo image |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
Cross delay is selected to create a moving stereo image |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Apply delay to sound source in preparation for required production. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Sound source is ensured by receiving sound source at delay unit input |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Presence of delay is ensured by monitoring delay output |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Send source is applied with auxiliary controls to send signal to delay unit to ensure signal flow |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Sound source is returned via master auxiliary return controls with delay signal effect to ensure signal flow |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Delay effects are applied to microphone inputs to ensure a wet signal |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
Delay effects are applied to line inputs to ensure a wet signal |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Create a delay or echo effect according to production requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Digital delays are created in accordance with requirements |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Echo effects are created in accordance with requirements |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Playback speed of analogue tape is adjusted to achieve required effect |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
A series of delays are created using sample copy and paste to simulate delays or echo effects |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 |
Evaluate and edit delay signal to a specified production tempo. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Repeated delays are achieved by applying feedback gains |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Output levels of delays are set to required levels3. Delay times for right and left channels are set to specified tempo |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Initial delay between the direct sound and early reflections are adjusted to a specified tempo, creating a rhythmic delay |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The texture of the delay signal from the source is changed by applying equalisation to the return delay signal |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Delay times for right and left channels are set to specified tempo |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
