PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable learners to interpret from one language to another, in a community-based context. Learners will make information accessible in the community, which information is otherwise inaccessible, empowering people to have a clear voice in their own community and the community at large.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Using linguistic and cultural codes that are relevant and familiar in a cultural context.
  • Conveying messages, the meaning of which is understandable to recipients
  • Conveying messages that reflect the intended source messages.
  • Providing interpreting services in the community.
  • Facilitating effective communication between stakeholders.
  • Assuring quality and adapting own performance in relation to brief.

    Dealing with "noise" (any interference that distorts the message, includes sounds, moods etc.)
    Learners learn to participate as responsible citizens in the life of local communities, by contributing to the resolution of conflict and by conducting themselves in an ethical and professional manner. They learn the importance of being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of contexts, whilst improving their earning ability, by obtaining recognised professional competence.

    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by a relevant ETQA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for this unit standard.

    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with a relevant ETQA.
    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with a relevant ETQA.
