PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are required to work in a blood transfusion donor clinic environment.

The procurement of safe blood from voluntary, non-remunerated, regular blood donors, who practise a safe lifestyle, is critical to the safety of the blood supply for transfusion. The qualifying learner will be able, through knowledge, skills and attitude, to work safely within the field of blood transfusion thus enhancing health care delivery and economic transformation.

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Understand and apply blood transfusion regulations and donor acceptance criteria
  • Know the different blood products and donor selection requirements
  • Comply with blood transfusion regulations and requirements while working in a blood donation venue 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Language and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 3
  • Mathematics equivalent to NQF level 3
  • Unit standard entitled: Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology relevant to phlebotomy - NQF level 4 or equivalent
  • Unit standard entitled: Comply with safety requirements in the medical pathology or blood transfusion fields - NQF level 4 or equivalent
