PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners working in the medical pathology or blood transfusion field and who are required to function effectively in this professional environment. Learners in this field need to acquire a life-long commitment to good professional and ethical practices. This unit standard aims to enable these learners to understand and apply medical ethical guidelines while performing their duties.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Understand professional values and behaviour and how they apply to their work environment
  • Understand and respect patient/client rights and apply the laws and rules relevant to confidentiality and informed consent
  • Apply the knowledge of legislation and regulations relevant to the practice of phlebotomy technicians

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider by the relevant ETQA.
