PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for temporary hair removal, assess the hair growth and skin of their client and perform the removal of unwanted facial and body hair. Learners are able to use strip wax, hot wax, sugaring depilation for the hair removal treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the temporary hair removal workstation according to organisational and hygienic requirements.
  • Assessing the hair growth and skin in order to perform a temporary hair removal service.
  • Performing the removal of unwanted facial and body hair by means of cold wax in accordance with organisational, safety and hygienic requirements.
  • Performing the removal of unwanted facial and body hair by means of hot wax in accordance with organisational, safety and hygienic requirements.
  • Discussing and explaining the use of aftercare products and services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Temporary hair removal services include hot waxing, strip waxing and sugaring.
  • A basic hygiene procedure includes the personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools, equipment, plinth / chair, area and trolley.
  • Receiving the client will include supply with appropriate protective clothing, positioning client comfortably.
  • Recognised safety precautions pertaining to electrical and chemical procedures must be applied.
  • Contra-indication and precaution checklist includes allergies, cuts and abrasions.
  • Correct and complete systems and products should be used.
  • Cold wax will include but not limited to strip wax and body temperature wax.

    The temporary hair removal receptacle is replenished (where necessary) with appropriate production.

    The temperature control is set according to manufacturer's instructions.

    The trolley for the temporary hair removal service is prepared with the appropriate tools, products and materials.

    The treatment plinth is appropriately covered and protected according to organisational requirements.

    Skin / hair disorder / diseases / conditions which preclude treatment are noted and referred, in a professional manner.

    The client is suitably positioned and clothing protected and draped for a cold wax and the area to be treated is prepared according to organisational and hygienic requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The treatment area is left clear of unwanted hair and wax, and appropriate aftercare products are applied according to client's needs and manufacturers instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consumption of products and materials is used in an economic and effective manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client record card is completed according to organisational requirements sales opportunities for further treatments and products and suitable homecare advice and support are identified and recommended that ate suitable with the clients needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The removal and disposal of cold wax is performed in accordance with organisational, hygienic and safety requirements and client discomfort is minimized and modesty maintained throughout the service.

    The temperature of the wax is tested and a safe, comfortable working temperature is maintained throughout the service and the cold wax is applied in accordance with organisational, hygienic and safety requirements.
