PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate the preparation of the work station and client in readiness for cutting and shaping of hair.

They will also be able to perform the cutting and shaping of hair in a safe and hygienic way. The learners will also be able to carry out an after care service thereby enhancing the service.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation in accordance to organisational and hygienic requirements.
  • Cutting hair using a variety one length technique.
  • Cutting hair using a variety of layered hairstyle technique.
  • Cutting hair using a variety of graduation technique.
  • Cutting hair using clipper technique.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Professional manner will include such as ethical standards, commitment to service, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice, posture and personal appearance.
  • Safety precautions will include ?protection of client's clothes and face; testing of water temperature to ensure client comfort; control of water pressure; protection of client's head against banging or scratching; using clean towels and tools; loose hair on floor is swept immediately after cutting; cutting instruments must be palmed and blades closed if not cutting; cutting implements are kept away from water; clean, oiled blades are used; sharp instruments are handled with care.

    Prepare the workstation in accordance to organisational and hygienic requirements.

    The workstation is prepared for the hair cutting service.

    The client is consulted with, in a professional manner to establish hair style requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is gowned, prepared and protected in readiness for a haircut according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety and hygienic practices are adhered to throughout the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Cut hair using a variety of one length technique. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Use different cutting techniques on curly and straight hair to create a variety of one-length looks. Variety of one-length looks includes above the shoulder, below the shoulder, with a fringe and without a fringe.

    The hair is sectioned and sub-sectioned before and during the cutting procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Design lines are followed throughout the cut.

    Cut hair using a variety of layering hairstyle techniques. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Use different cutting techniques on curly and straight hair to create uniform layering and graduated layering effects on a variety of layered looks. Varieties of layered looks include above the shoulder, below the shoulder, with a fringe and without a fringe.

    The appropriate sectioning and sub-sectioning of hair is demonstrated before and during the cutting procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Design lines are followed throughout the cut.

    The appropriate angle is used to achieve the hair style/cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Different cutting tools and techniques are used correctly and effectively.

    The haircut is cross checked after completion of the cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hair cutting service is finished off according to salon procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Cut hair using a variety of graduation techniques. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Use different cutting techniques on curly and straight hair to create uniform layering, graduated layering, scissors over comb, razor, clipper, texturising and freehand effects on a variety of fashion looks. Varieties of fashion looks include above the shoulder and below the shoulder.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate sectioning and sub-sectioning of hair is demonstrated before and during the cutting procedure ensuring neatness at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Design lines are followed throughout the cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different cutting tools and techniques are used correctly and effectively. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The haircut is checked after completion of the cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The hair cutting service is finished off according to salon procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Cut hair using clipper technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The clipper technique is explained and demonstrated using practical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate clipper guard is selected and attached to the clipper. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The position of the client head is maintained throughout the clipper cutting procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A continuous movement of clipper is applied to cut the hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The remainder of the hair is blended with the clipper cut.
