PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a fibre/silk service and prepare the client for the required treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation and client for a fibre / silk service according to organisational requirements
  • Preparing the nail plate according to manufacturers recommendation
  • Applying, shaping and blending artificial tips
  • Applying nail repair and overlay
  • Applying fibre / silk nails to clients requirements
  • Filling and removing fibre / silk nails

    Learners assessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards: Perform a manicure and Perform a pedicure at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the workstation for fibre/silk enhancement service according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation is prepared for a fibre/silk nail technology service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The client is received ad prepared according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client's nail and skin is assessed and any abnormalities that preclude treatments are recorded on client record card. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All recommendations of further treatments as well as possible home care products are recorded. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the nail plate according to manufacturers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    A complete set of nails should be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Prepare the cuticles and nail plate according to the manufacturers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate products and implement as listed by the supplier and company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The understanding of different preparation products used are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply, shape and blend artificial tips. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tips are selected to fit the "C" curve of the natural nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tips are applied with correct adhesive and should fit from "side to side". 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nail tips that are appropriate to the size and shape of the clients natural nails are used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tips are cut and shaped according to client's preference. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tips are blended to a natural colour without any lines, milky shadows or over buffing company's according to company's safety and hygienic requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply nail repair and overlay.

    A complete system should be used and no mixing and matching of products should occur. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The weak point should be reinforced with resin and mesh according to manufacturers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The overly is applied to follow the natural shape of the nail according the manufacturers recommendation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The application techniques are managed so that it leaves a free margin around the cuticle and sidewall area of the nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The finished surface of the nail is balanced with a smooth even shine surface with no ridges at the cuticle line and an even clear defined small line.

    Apply fibre / silk nails according to client's requirements.

    The manufacturer's instructions for product use and application is followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Application techniques are adapted to meet the client's nail shape and condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nail shape and length complements the client's nails and hands. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The manufacturer's instruction for product use and application are followed closely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The application techniques are managed so that it leaves a free margin around the cuticles and sidewall area of the nail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The finished surface of the nail is balanced with a smooth, even finish no ridges at cuticles and an even clear defined small line. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Complete the client's record card and advise client on homecare treatments, retail products and time schedule for follow up appointment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Service is conducted according to organisation's hygiene standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The condition of the natural nail and enhancement structure is accurately identified and the information on the client record card is updated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The maintenance techniques to restore the structure to its original conditions is used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    When the fibre / silk nail is removed, the natural nail should be undamaged and free from traces of product.
