PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a facial. Record information on the client card; assess the clients' skin using appropriate equipment. Learner is also able to apply exfoliation, deep cleaning, mask products and moisturiser on the face and décolleté


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the facial consultancy workstation according to organisational and hygienic requirements
  • Recording all relevant information on the Client Record Card for immediate use and to update for future consultations
  • Assessing the skin by utilising appropriate equipment and skin care products
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the relevant exfoliation / deep cleansing technique according to organisational, hygienic and safety requirements
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the relevant mask products and techniques according to organisational and hygienic requirements
  • Selecting and applying a moisturiser on the face and décolleté according to organisational and hygienic requirements 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • A basic hygiene procedure includes the personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools, equipment, plinth / chair, area and trolley
  • Appropriate equipment for skin assessment may include magnifying lamp
  • Appropriate skin care products for skin assessment includes eye make up remover, cleanser and toner
  • Skin type / condition range includes normal, dry, dehydrated, combination, oily, sensitive, delicate and mature
  • Causative factors for skin type / condition includes products and environment
  • Receiving the client will include supplying appropriate protective clothing and positioning them comfortably
  • Contra-indications and precautions will include allergies, cuts and abrasions
  • Lifestyle includes occupation, exercise, stress levels and leisure activities
  • Skin assessment includes skin type and or / conditions, sebaceous secretions, moisture content, skin elasticity, muscle tone, cutaneous circulation, sensitivity, pore size, lines and wrinkles, imperfections and sun sensitivity
  • Commercial masks include setting and non-setting

    Prepare the facial consultancy workstation according to organisational and hygienic requirements.

    Lighting, temperature and ventilation are set in an appropriate manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The chair / plinth is protected according to organisational requirements.

    The trolley with relevant tools, materials, products, make-up cosmetics and record keeping documentation is prepared in accordance with organisational requirements.

    An appropriate waste receptacle is positioned within reach of the workstation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment to be used during the assessment procedure is organised in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the process.

    The client is received and consulted with in accordance with safety and hygienic and organisational requirements, displaying a professional manner and attitude throughout the service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The skin is prepared for assessment by thoroughly removing make-up ensuring effectiveness at hairline, lips and lashes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The skin is assessed using appropriate magnification and lighting, recognising and identifying the skin type / conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Possible causative factors of the skin type / condition is determined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Skin diseases / disorder / conditions which preclude treatment are appropriately referred in a professional manner.

    Homecare advice and support is recommended that is suitable clients needs.

    The appropriate biological, enzymatic or abrasive peeling product is selected according to the skin type and conditions.

    The benefits to the client of the selected peeling product is explained verbally. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The application and removal techniques of the peeling product are explained using the appropriate techniques according to manufacturers' instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sales opportunities for further treatment or products and suitable homecare advice and support are identified and recommended that are suitable with the clients needs.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant mask products.
