PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this Unit Standard will be able to plan and set out for labour intensive construction (LIC) structural works, understand and explain basic LIC methods, perform labour intensive structural, and appurtenant works, and perform LIC structural repair and maintenance works.

The Unit Standard contributes to the development of a professional community of Construction Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Labour Intensive Construction is a mechanism for the provision of work and for the entry of unemployed labour into the industry It also contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The learning outcomes in this unit standard will enable a learner to supervise a labour intensive team/single activity, within one field or area of works
1. Structures that may be constructed using Labour Intensive Methods include:
  • Dams and weirs, including earthfill, stone masonry and rollcrete dams
  • Low level bridges and causeways
  • Arch bridges
  • Culverts

    2. Structural Labour Intensive Construction activities include:
  • Stone masonry (random rubble masonry)
  • Reinforced concrete including shuttering and formwork
  • Pipework
  • Stone pitching (grouted and ungrouted)
  • Rip rap
  • Precast concrete elements
  • "Armco" portal culverts
  • a range of general activities involving the excavating of trenches in a variety of materials, loading, handling, hauling, unloading, spreading, placing, mixing, levelling, and compacting of various natural and manufactured construction materials.

    3. Setting out for structural works using LIC methods includes:

  • Random rubble masonry walls and abutments
