PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage anxiety and depression in themselves or others. It could be useful for peer and community counselors and managers. It should make employers aware of the need for positive management of anxiety and depression to ensure productivity and the creation of a caring environment where anxious and depressed employees are supported and accommodated.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing anxiety and its impact on the workplace.
  • Describing depression and its impact on the workplace.
  • Distinguishing between anxiety, depression and stress.
  • Investigating ways of supporting and accommodating anxiety and depression in the workplace.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF level 1

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is: Anxiety and depression excluding manic depressives and psychotic conditions.

    Indicators of anxiety are identified and an indication is given of the importance of early identification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible reasons for workplace anxiety are identified with reference to work related, people related and environmental issues. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of anxiety on the individual is explained with specific reference to personality and coping skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The impact of anxiety on the workplace is explained with specific reference to productivity.

    Describe depression and its impact on the workplace.

    The difference between anxiety and depression is explained with reference to time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The type of support needed by anxious or depressed individuals is compared in terms of counseling, therapy and referral. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The difference between anxiety and depression is explained in terms of productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationship between anxiety, depression and stress is explained with reference to the consequences if indicators are ignored in a work situation.

    Investigate ways of supporting and accommodating anxiety and depression in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors that contribute to anxiety and depression of employees are investigated for a specific workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The extent of anxiety and depression in a particular organisation or business unit is estimated in order to determine the need for a strategic intervention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Suggestions are made for the support and accommodation of employees who suffer from anxiety or depression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of trust and confidentiality in supporting employees in the workplace is explained with reference to the right to confidentiality. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • This Unit Standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator, registered with the relevant accredited ETQA responsible for the quality assurance of this Unit Standard.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the appropriate quality assuring ETQA, or Learning Programme approval with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the quality assuring ETQA.
  • Verification (external moderation) of assessment and moderation by the provider, will be conducted by the relevant quality assuring ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant Qualification and the agreed ETQA policy and procedures.
  • An individual wishing to be assessed through RPL against this Unit Standard, may apply to an assessment agency or provider institution accredited by the relevant quality assuring ETQA, or by an ETQA that has a formal agreement/accreditation with the relevant quality assuring ETQA.
