PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage anxiety and depression in themselves or others.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Indicating causes of anxiety and depression in daily life.
  • Identifying behaviour associated with anxiety and depression.
  • Indicating how to manage anxiety and depression in own life.
  • Indicating how an individual can support others who suffer from anxiety or depression. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is anxiety and depression excluding manic-depressives and psychotic conditions.

    Indicate causes of anxiety and depression in daily life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different meanings of the words anxious and anxiety are explored and an indication is given of when an individual is anxious and when an individual is suffering from anxiety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different meanings of the words depression and depressed are explored and an indication is given of when an individual is depressed and when an individual is suffering from depression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible reasons why an individual may become anxious or depressed or may suffer from anxiety or depression are identified with reference to environmental, socio-economic, interpersonal and intrapersonal factors.

    Identify behaviour associated with anxiety and depression.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of behaviour that could indicate anxiety or depression are identified with reference to observable behaviour patterns that affect day-to-day life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Evidence of behaviours that could indicate anxiety or depression is identified from sudden lifestyle changes.

    Indicate how to manage anxiety and depression in own life.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of knowing own reactions and behaviour patterns is explained with reference to identifying and acknowledging signs of own anxiety or depression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Factors that cause anxiety and depression in own life are identified and suggestions are made as to how to deal with each factor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of seeking help when suffering from anxiety or depression is explained and an indication is given of the consequences of ignoring indicators of anxiety or depression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of a balanced lifestyle is explained in terms of managing anxiety or depression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Own attitudes towards anxiety and depression are examined and discussed with reference to stigma and stereotyping. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Indicate how an individual can support others who are suffering from anxiety or depression.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Listening and communication are discussed as a means of support and an indication is given of the importance of trust and confidentiality in a relationship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Behaviour that could indicate a need for support is identified and indications are given of when it is appropriate to take action or suggest assistance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need to provide ongoing support for people who suffer from anxiety or depression is explained and an indication is given of possible consequences if support is withdrawn.
