PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is to enable relevant personnel to conduct evacuations and emergency drills.

Benefit for society of this unit standard is that the person who completes this will contribute to safety in society.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify and assess the emergency or safety situation.
  • Initiate course of action to deal with the emergency or safety situation.
  • Implement and supervise an evacuation in accordance with workplace procedures and relevant legislation.

    This unit standard applies to relevant personnel who will be involved with the implementation of evacuations and emergency drills.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and assess the emergency or safety situation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Emergency or Safety situation must include:
  • Fire
  • Bomb
  • Hazardous material, etc.

    Prioritised/graded must include:
  • No evacuation
  • Partial evacuation
  • Full evacuation

    Work procedures must include:
  • Rules, regulations, contingency plans and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Nature of emergency or safety situation is established.

    2. Emergency is correctly prioritised/graded in accordance with workplace procedures.

    3. Information regarding the emergency is relayed in accordance with workplace procedures.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Relevant emergency services must include:

  • Ambulance services, etc.

    1. Relevant emergency services are contacted and advised.

    2. Emergency services provided with access where necessary.

    3. Implement and supervise a search and or contain area of emergency/safety incident in accordance with workplace procedures and relevant legislation.

    4. Relevant evacuation orders/instructions issued to all role players. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Implement and supervise an evacuation. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Implement and supervise an evacuation in accordance with workplace procedures and relevant legislation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Evacuation orders/instructions must include:
  • Mobilise internal fire fighting/first aid/hazmat/evacuation marshals
  • Building/floor plans.
  • Hydrants/access routes clear.
  • Shut down building electrical systems, gas, lifts, etc.
  • Evacuate people using prearranged routes, etc.

    Roll call must include:
  • People present,
  • People missing,
  • People undergoing treatment, etc.

    Documentation must include:
  • Final roll call
  • Report regarding emergency/incident status.

    1. Correct response verifies that evacuation orders/instructions given are carried out as per workplace procedures.

    3. Liaise with relevant role players and stakeholders with regards to roll call.

    5. Briefing emergency services verifies status of situation.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into, procedures.
