PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for learners in the field of safety in society who supervise and coordinate activities of officials in the field of safety in society especially the policing environment
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Oversee and supervise the admission and detention of suspects and detainees
  • Enforce and implement issues regarding bail
  • Ensure the safe keeping of suspects and detainees property and relevant exhibits
  • Coordinate and supervise the inspection of cells
  • Coordinate and supervise serving of meals
  • Ensure and uphold the rights of suspects and detainees

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the safety in society environment and more specially within the policing environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the safety in society environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons coordinating and supervising officials with a level of authority that will allow them to take decisions independently. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Coordinate and supervise the inspection of cells. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety deviations are identified and rectified according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Complaints and requests are noted, registered and handle according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hygiene is maintained in cells and surroundings according Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Unauthorized articles are confiscated and handled according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The need for searching the cells is determined and enforced when needed according to the constitution of South Africa Chapter 2, Bill of Rights. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    At least two persons are present during the visiting of cells according to organisational policies and procedures.

    Oversee and supervise the admission and custody of suspects and detainees.

    The personal details of detainees and suspects are compared with the relevant register. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The actual status of the suspects and detainees in cells are compared with relevant documentation

    The fingerprint form of the suspect and detainee is inspected and signed for completeness before admission is granted

    Different types of suspects and detainees are admitted in various cells according to organizational procedures

    All financial aspects regarding suspects and detainees are coordinated before suspects and detainees are admitted to the cells according to organizational procedures

    Entries are made in relevant registers pertaining the detainees and suspects (personal details, actual status and financial aspects according to organizational procedures)

    All requests for the granting of bail are noted and registered according to organizational procedures and the Criminal Procedure Act

    The member responsible for the investigation of the case docket is contacted and approval is sought for the granting of bail

    The conditions for bail are spelt out to the applicant according to the Criminal Procedure Act

    The amount for granting bail is determined with the responsible member for the investigation of the case docket according to organizational procedures

    Bail money is received and receipted in the relevant register according to the criminal justice system
