PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard is able to analyse a problem for a consulting project and determine a suitable remedial action.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Obtaining a clear, accurate understanding of a specific problem (or set of problems) affecting a client's business, organisation or project
  • Assessing the symptoms of the problems identified
  • Identifying the core source of the problem(s)
  • Identifying all possible ways of eliminating the problem
  • Applying a suitable consulting model to the task of selecting the appropriate solution 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The learner will not engage in consultancy as an independent practitioner, but will do so in collaboration with, and under the guidance of, more experienced consultants.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A relevant set of probes and questions, aimed at determining the problems affecting a client's business, is prepared for administration to the client 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The answers and/or responses obtained are properly recorded, thoroughly analysed and comprehensively documented, in line with organisational procedures and policies, to achieve a shared understanding of the difficulties experienced by the client within the consulting firm 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess the symptoms of the problems identified.

    Information on all visible symptoms of the problem is collected, recorded and analysed for assessing the scope of the problems being experienced by the client

    Appropriate logical conclusions are drawn from this analysis

    Apply a suitable consulting model to the task of selecting the appropriate solution.

    A variety of models, that may potentially be applied to solve the problem, are identified, listed and compared with respect to their advantages and disadvantages

    A model is chosen for dealing with the problem, with reasons, for the approval of the client.

    Action plans are put in place to resolve the problem in line with organisational policies and procedures, and with the cooperation of the client and customers (end-users of change)
