PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner achieving this unit standard will be able to participate independently or as part of a team in security related operations as conducted by the security forces in a hostile rural environment. The emphasis is on the application of procedures and the consideration of environmental factors to ensure mission success without compromising safety of individuals and risk to the state.
A qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare for participation in operations conducted in a hostile rural environment.
  • Move tactically within a changing hostile rural environment. Learners will be able to adapt techniques to suit changes in the threat as well as geographics of the micro theatre of operations.
  • Handle contingency situations during movement through a hostile rural environment.
  • Tactically engage planned targets within a rural environment
    The achievement of this unit standard will equip a learner with the ability to be employed in a number of security related disciplines necessary to maintain peace and stability and the sovereignty of the state.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners applying to enter this programme are assumed to be competent in:
  • English literacy.
  • Use a hand held compass for navigational purposes NQF level 4.
  • Interpreting a topographical map for navigational purposes NQF level 4.
  • Handle weapons NQF level 5.
  • Use firearms in tactical duty related situations NQF level 5.
  • Conduct basic demolition tasks NQF level 5.
  • Basic swimming skills required.

    The ability to understand and implement given instructions through an organisational defined level of personal preparation and planning is demonstrated.

    The ability to assess the information in a given instruction and determine the personal logistic requirements to participate in a rural operation within a given scenario is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The information in the given instruction is assessed and the personal logistic requirements to participate in a rural operation within a given scenario are estimated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A given threat scenario is analysed and a course of action based on the principles of tactical engagement is designed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to analyse given scenarios and adapt to a specific role within the scenario as part of a team to achieve the given objective is demonstrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A perceived threat is evaluated and a decision is made to take a course of action that will counter the perceived threat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to assess the risk situation and follow the set drills described in work place procedures when separated from the team are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to assess the situation when surrounded by hostile forces and create a favourable balance of force to facilitate the breaking out of encirclement is demonstrated. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
    4. Anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any relevant assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
    5. For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, subject matter experience and assessment experience.
  • As a minimum requirement, the assessor needs to be competent in the planning and conducting assessment of learning outcomes as described in the unit standard "Plan and Conduct assessment of learning outcomes" NQF level > The subject matter experience of the assessor can be established by recognition of prior learning.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING 
    Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made. The geographic and threat environment in which the learner will function is fluid. The learner must be able to analyse the given factors and weigh different options in order to design an acceptable solution to a threat to such an extent that his own life, those of others as well as the sovereignty of the state are ensured. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING 
    Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community. The balance of power in a high threat situation is dependant on the ability to combine individual firepower and actions into a single effort. The member must be able to cooperate to this end within the set of procedures and the following/execution of clear orders. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING 
    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively. The learner will have the capability of organising his equipment and actions in such a way that it will facilitate group cooperation. This capability will be proven to such an extent that communication through actions can take place, without having to compromise security of movement (stealth), on which the success of a mission might depend. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Communicate effectively using visual and language skills in modes of oral and written persuasion. The learner will be able to apply communication as a critical principle of warfare. He will communicate in clearly understandable language through a set of organisational accepted terms within the different situations which he will be engaged in during deployment in a rural environment. Communication mediums such as radio's, sign language, written reports etc must be understood and interpreted in such a way that orders are carried out in a meaningful and synchronised fashion. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE 
    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of others. The learner will be capable of utilising the weapons and equipment in a controlled responsible way. This will be done through a proper appreciation of safety factors of all weapons under his control in order to promote the preservation and health of those not opposing his will. 

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep in mind the following general guidelines and principles when designing and conducting assessments:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the specific outcomes of the unit standard and ensure that the assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Assessment must include practical demonstration either in the workplace or through simulation. A range of assessment methods should be used, including:
    - Direct observation - watch the learner carry out the tasks or produce the desired outcome.
    - Simulation of a specific task - set a specific task for the learner to demonstrate in a simulated environment (e.g. demonstrating an ambush or raid).
    - Questioning (verbal or written) - ask the relevant questions linked to the unit standard.
