This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for a person who works in an explosives environment where explosives and various items containing explosives are manufactured, tested and quality assured. Knowledge regarding properties, behaviour, performance, safety requirements and uses of explosives as well as the application of performance testing procedures and the interpretation of performance results, will ensure safe and quality assured explosives products.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of performance testing,
  • Conduct performance testing procures,
  • Analyse and interpret the performance testing results,
  • Report and recommend findings.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Description of required skills, knowledge and understanding on:
  • Understanding of the behaviour, performance and uses of explosives.
  • Understanding of occupational health, safety and environment legislation relevant to the explosive manufacturing environment
  • Understanding of the manufacturing and control of explosives manufacturing processes.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Performance testing may refer to the testing of fuze arming and sealing, detonic trains, deflagration trains, power output of detonators, boosters and main charges, shattering effect of main charges, optimisation of main charges, prescribed output of all pyrotechnical devices, functioning times of all cords, safety fuse, primers, fuzes and delay elements.

This unit will contribute to the full development and further mobility and transportability within the fields of manufacturing and technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and progression within the manufacturing context where explosives and items containing explosives are being handled and manufactured.

The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a wide range of technical skills and offers a considerable choice of procedures. A broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts, analytical interpretation of information, informed judgement and a range of sometime innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in advanced trade and technical occupations.

The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate and reflects the average length of time for an average qualifying learner to become competent.
  • Recommended contact time and individual learning: 60 hours
  • Recommended time spent in structured learning in the workplace and assessment: 40 hours
  • Total notional hours: 100 hours
