PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to identify symptoms of system malfunctions, identify and select appropriate instruments, apply logical and systematic fault finding approaches as well as test electronic equipment and machinery for compliance.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners will have attained the National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes at NQF Level 3 or equivalent qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Verbal or written questioning of mechanicians includes visual, sound and timing of occurrences.
  • Observation of machinery includes visual, hearing, smelling and touching.
  • Fault finding data includes data direct observation and measurement.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identifying symptoms which are related to system malfunctions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Calibration of instruments is explained appropriate to manufacturers specifications and requirements and work instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Applying logical and systematic fault finding approaches to identify and locate fault causes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Faults are found and identified within agreed time frames in accordance with standard testing methods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Faults and their cause are systematically located, and supported by tangible fault finding data in accordance with standard testing methods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Faults and their causes are located without trial and error replacement of parts in accordance with standard testing methods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Fault finding methods are logical and are explained according to laid down procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Fault finding methods are repeated and the results are consistent and appropriate to company production plans.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Faults are rectified promptly in accordance with manufacturers specifications.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
