PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to Undertake Elementary Geological monitoring in any working environment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understanding the significance of geological mapping of the mining regions.
  • Collect geological samples.
  • Report geological observations.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF Level 3 numeracy and literacy. The ability Undertake Basic Seismic Interpretation will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    Understanding the significance of geological mapping of the mining regions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Establish the nature of the data required and how it is used in determining the suitability of different mining tools for various geological conditions.

    2. Understand how this data is analysed and presented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Be able to interpret side scan sonar, pinger and other seismic records as well as footwall and sediment contour maps.

    4. Applicable task specific legal and safety requirements are understood and explained.

    1. Ensure that security requirements are adhered to before collecting geological samples from the plant.

    2. Identify the most suitable areas for the collection of overboard material.

    3. Ensure that samples conform to the prescribed size.

    4. Ensure that samples are packed, labelled and dispatch in the prescribed way.

    5. Collect samples that promise to be geologically informative e.g. Clean, un-weathered footwall and conglomerate.

    6. Ensure that samples are representative of the mining block and where possible, taken from different areas of the mining block.

    7. Correlate features on side scan sonar with samples collected.

    5. When describing gravel, include volume of material, composition, shape (sphericity or roundness), colour, grain size, sorted or unsorted, texture, etc.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with the FE / HE registrar.

    Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • A minimum of 2 (two) years` practical, relevant occupational experience.
  • Declared competent in all the outcomes of the National Assessor Unit Standards as stipulated by SAQA.

    Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant must be provided (Portfolio of Evidence).
