PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Operating, maintaining and shutting-down steel cutting machines in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and legislative and workplace safety requirements. Demonstrate techniques for cutting steel, for bending, bundling and tagging steel, and layout of a steel cutting workshop
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to work in a steel cutting workshop and operate and maintain steel cutting machinery. In addition to the above learners will be able to prepare and cut steel, cut steel and conduct post cutting operations.

It contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this unit standard.

The typical scope of this unit standard:
  • The learner must prove to be competent on steel cutting, either manually or using a computerised steel cutting machine.

    Personal protective equipment and clothing are identified and their use demonstrated.

    All tools and equipment required for the task are identified and ensured to be functional, and are ready for use at the work area.

    Steel to be cut is identified to be of the correct type, length and diameter in accordance with specified schedules.

    The steel cutting machine is checked to be functional in terms of the manufacturer's specifications and start up procedures.

    The cutting lengths and diameters are identified and set in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    Other related work activities are communicated with in order to maintain productive work flow in compliance with given schedules.

    Cutting lengths, thickness and type of steel are confirmed in accordance with relevant schedules.

    Lengths are ensured to be cut in such a way as to optimise steel usage in accordance with normal business practice.

    Steel is fed into cutting machine at appropriate production rate.

    The consequences of feeding the steel incorrectly are explained in terms of potential damage to machine and quality of work.
