PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Operate water treatment systems used in refrigeration and air-conditioning installations without injury to persons or damage to equipment or environment.

  • The commonly applied chemicals for treatment of chilled water, condenser water and hot water systems as used in air-conditioning and refrigeration plants.

    Explain the reasons for water treatment.

    The factors that reduce heat exchange are listed and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of heating the water on the heat exchange are listed and discussed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the effect of non-treatment of the water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects non-treatment has on plant operation and life are listed and discussed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Obtain water samples from each of the circuits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need for taking precautions against samples becoming contaminated by external contaminants is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Samples being taken for analysis are not contaminated by or during the sampling process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    No water other than the amount required for the sample is lost from the circuit. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain and demonstrate the safety precautions to take and the personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear when handling biocides and other chemicals used in treating the water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The safe handling procedures of biocides and each of the other chemicals must conform to the requirements of the manufacturer of each product are listed and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemicals are handled using personal protective equipment and in accordance with the requirements of each manufacturer. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Dose each circuit with the correct chemical(s) and in the amount prescribed in the analyst's report.

    Explain the need for accurate dosing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chemicals are correctly identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The prescribed amount of chemical is transferred from its container into a dosing cylinder without spillage.

    The chemical is successfully put into the correct water circuit
