PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Installing and service belt drives and couplings, with a power transferring capacity of up to 25kW, which are commonly applied to air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation equipment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Use hand tools and measuring instruments used in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and ventilation trades. Identify belt drives, couplings and gearboxes used on air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation plants and recognise misaligned, mismatched and worn components. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Only drives and couplings fitted to motors up to 25kW are to be considered.
The installation and servicing of:
  • Single and multiple belt applications with V-belts, wedge belts and special profile belts.
  • Tyre and disc couplings.
  • Alignment by mechanical means only.

    The pulleys and belts are checked for unacceptable wear.

    The motor, driven machine and the belt drive are installed to satisfy their intended function and are secured in accordance with specifications.

    All bolts and screws are tightened correctly.

    Tools are used and applied correctly.

    All safety precautions are applied.

    The consequences of installing the wrong pulleys or belts or wrong alignment are explained.

    The belts are fitted and tensioned according to specifications.

    The pulleys, belts or couplings are checked and found to be within specified wear limits.

    The angular and parallel alignment is checked, compared with manufacturer's specifications and corrected if required.

    The belt tension is checked and corrected, if required, according to specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The belts are replaced as a matched set in multi-belt applications.

    The drive guard is checked for safety and re-installed correctly.

    All safety precautions are observed.

    The consequences of faulty alignment and tensioning are stated and discussed.
