PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to apply the key doctrines of the Christian faith to the personal, religious and social dimensions of their lives.
Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain how key Christian doctrines are relevant for the life and work of the Christian Church
  • Explain how key Christian doctrines apply to and affect the personal lives of Christians
  • Analyse how key Christian doctrines affect the Church's mission and role in the wider community

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • The broad range of doctrines accepted by the Christian Church generally and historically
  • 'The Church' as local congregations, denominations and as a world body
  • The personal and devotional life of the Christian believer
  • 'The world' as local communities, national entities and the whole world at large

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain how key Christian doctrines are relevant for the life and work of the Christian Church. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    At least four key doctrines. These may include doctrines of creation, sin, salvation, trinitology, Christology, pneumatology, ecclesiology and the sacraments 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Links between the formal statements of the doctrines and the way the doctrines are embodied are explained by observing the way the Church functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An example might be the link between an historical statement of the doctrine of the sacraments and the way that reverent and informed celebration of those sacraments might sustain the life of the Church
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The links between the formal statements of and the embodiment of the doctrines to show how these doctrines are explained to show how these doctrines affect the life and work of the Church. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least four examples are given. These must correspond to the four doctrines chosen.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how key Christian doctrines apply to the Christian's own personal life. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    At least three key doctrines, not previously used in this Unit Standard must be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The links between the formal statement of the doctrines and the expression or effect of those doctrines are identified in terms of their effect on the personal life of the Christian. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An example might be the link between a statement of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit (pneumatology) and the way that a Christian's worship life might be enhanced by an understanding of that doctrine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The links between the formal statement of the doctrines and the expression of those doctrines are explained to show how the doctrines affect the personal life of the Christian. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least three examples are given. These should correspond to the three doctrines chosen. They may include examples from the learner's own personal experience.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain how key Christian doctrines affect the Church's mission and action towards the community at large.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Significant needs or problems are identified within local communities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    May include poverty, HIV/AIDS, racism, sexism, abuse of children or women.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate actions that the Christian Church might make in response to the needs or problems are identified with reference to the statement of the doctrines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    'The Church' may include any or all of local congregations, groups of congregations, denominations, or the whole Christian Church.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The 'Mission Statement' of the learner's own denomination is explained with reference to the envisaged outcomes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The actions are evaluated to determine their applicability in the learner's own context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measures of 'realism' might include financial considerations, time limits and cultural modalities.

  • Creation - the Christian understanding that the world was created by God
  • Angelology - the Christian understanding of created bodiless spiritual powers, including angels, fallen angels and demons
  • Anthropology - the Christian understanding of human nature
  • Sin - the Christian understanding of the way in which evil operates in the world through human beings
  • Salvation - the Christian understanding of the way in which God acts to overcome evil in the world
  • Trinitology - the Christian understanding the nature of God as three persons in one essence
  • Christology - the Christian understanding of the nature and person of Jesus Christ (who he is, and what he is)
