This Unit Standard will be useful to people who want to appreciate the use of ikons in Christian worship, teach others about ikonography, or paint ikons.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:

  • Describe the various styles and methods of ikonography
  • Explain the theological meaning of ikons

    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    The history of ikonography is accurately described with reference to various sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different views of the nature and value of ikons are described and explained with reference to specific ikons. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the various styles and methods of ikonography. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes mosaic, fresco, tempera on board. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The methods and materials pertaining to iconography are accurately described according to preserved records. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparation of the materials is described, and different methods are compared with reference to the media and their use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The difference between ikons and other forms of Christian art is explained with reference to techniques and periods. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the theological meaning of ikons. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Sources include ancient and modern writings, and especially the records of the 2nd council of Nicaea. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The theological meaning of ikons in general is described and discussed by relating them to their symbolism. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The history of the iconoclastic controversy is described with reference to debates throughout the history of Christianity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Particular ikons are identified and described in detail. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including, but not limited to, Christ Pantokrator, Ikons of the Theotokos, ikons of the major feasts: Nativity, Pascha, Pentecost, Transfiguration, ikons of six saints.
