PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to Undertake Hyper-Fix Positioning in Circular mode in any working environment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Install and set up the equipment.
  • Set up the Receiver / Controller.
  • Reference to the primary positioning system.
  • Maintain positioning accuracy.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF Level 3 numeracy. Computer literacy. The ability to Undertake Hyper-fix monitoring and undertake all aspects of Differential Satellite Positioning System positioning for Hydrographic purposes will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    Install and set up the equipment.

    1. Ensure all equipment has been installed correctly.

    2. Run or test equipment with technicians.

    3. Ensure antenna positions are correct and offsets are correctly calculated.

    4. Confirm operational sequence and type (ship code).

    5. Check shore station availability and check that the co-ordinate list is correct and up to date.

    6. Ensure that the angle of cut will be sufficient to ensure positioning accuracy.

    7. Confirm correct operational frequencies, code and parameter settings.

    8. Ensure that the primary positioning system is correctly installed and operational, and that referencing routines are in place along with backups.

    1. Obtain a reference position from the primary positioning system.

    2. Calculate the Hyper-fix antenna position using offset distance, angle and ship's heading.

    3. Calculate joins from the antenna to each shore station. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Using join distances calculate whole lanes and milli-lanes using relevant lane widths for each frequency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Apply whole lane widths to receiver/controller and phase offsets to Shore stations.

    6. Repeat referencing process until desired accuracy is obtained.

    7. Run positioning software and ensure that the data transfer between receiver/controller and positioning computer is operational.

    2. Sort out problems such as lane slip and re-reference to primary positioning system when necessary.

    3. Always ensure that the positioning systems are well referenced and stay closely referenced to the primary positioning system.

    4. Ensure that monitoring of the shore stations and the receiver/controller is carried out on the relevant booking sheets.

    5. Inform the relevant personnel of any system abnormalities before they develop into problems.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and register with the FE / HE registrar.

    Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
  • A minimum of 2 (two) years` practical, relevant occupational experience.
  • Declared competent in all the outcomes of the National Assessor Unit Standards as stipulated by SAQA.

    Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant must be provided (Portfolio of Evidence).

  • The Receiver / Controller is one of the three units which combine to form the Hyper-Fix system. It serves as the interface between the user (and the user`s system) and the Hyper-Fix system.
  • Pattern pairs are the combination of Sequence and Type (Shore station code) as defined in the chain planner.
  • Triggered - once the unit has locked on to the chain it is triggered by one of the stations in the chain.
  • Lanes - the distance from the shore stations is measured in lanes and milli-lanes that are a function of the frequency at which the lanes are being transmitted.
  • Phase offsets - the amount by which the milli-lanes must be corrected for accurate positioning and which are stored in the shore stations as phase offsets.
  • Lane idents are an indication by the Receiver / Controller of the accuracy of the ranging to the shore stations.
