PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to assemble an apparatus case and its contents according to plans and specifications by applying signalling engineering practice. This will ensure the availability of a correctly assembled apparatus case, which contributes in part to a reliable railway signalling system, safe and efficient train operations and effective rail transportation.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because performance must be carried out:
    1. In a controlled environment.
    2. Within a specific time.
    3. At a field site or in a workshop (might or might not include overhead traction equipment).
    4. Under simulated or actual operational conditions.

    This standard covers the assembly of a typical apparatus case as used in the signalling environment.
    Note: A typical apparatus case contains the following:
  • Relay backboards
  • Lightning arrestor holders
  • Links and fuse holders/circuit breakers
  • Cable termination devices
  • Pre-wired train detection inserts

    This standard excludes the wiring, cabling and installation of an apparatus case.

    Plan and procure the resources required to safely and correctly perform the assembly of an apparatus case.
