PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to perform corrective preventative maintenance on an apparatus case according to prescribed corrective tasks, by applying signalling engineering practice. The learner will also be able to identify, prioritise and report any potential failure maintenance tasks. This will ensure the availability of functional apparatus cases as required, which contribute in part to a reliable railway signalling system, safe and efficient train operations and effective rail transportation.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The credit value assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because performance must be carried out:
    1. In a controlled environment.
    2. Within a specific time.
    3. At a field site (might or might not include overhead traction equipment).
    4. Under simulated or actual operational conditions.

    When overhead traction equipment is present, the learner must have a valid certificate related to high voltage equipment, which certifies the learner to work under specific conditions and within a specified area.

    This standard covers the CPM of a typical apparatus case as used in the signalling environment.
    Note: A typical apparatus case contains the following:
  • Relay backboards
  • Lightning arrestor holders
  • Links and fuse holders/circuit breakers
  • Cable termination devices
  • Pre-wired train detection inserts

    This standard excludes RPM and fault-finding on an apparatus case.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and procure the resources required to perform corrective preventive maintenance (CPM) tasks on an apparatus case safely and correctly.

    The job order is interpreted to establish the relevant resources required to perform the CPM as per specification.

    The correct plans and/or diagrams for the CPM of the apparatus case are utilised.

    The correct resource requirements are determined and obtained to perform CPM on an apparatus case.

    The repaired apparatus case is tested and proved to be functionally correct according to signalling specifications.

    The correct testing procedures which conform to signal engineering practice are applied to an apparatus case and any other potentially affected equipment.

    Deviations from standards are correctly identified, prioritised and rectified.

    Unforeseen circumstances related to the CPM process are addressed effectively.

    Documentation relevant to the testing procedure is completed correctly as per company policies.

    These methods must be selected carefully based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method could be used to assess knowledge, or on-the-job demonstration for practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods (no less than three of those detailed above) in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes.
