PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Demonstrating an integrated practical and theoretical grounding in Crane Operations, knowledge of the main types and categories of cranes; knowledge of safe practices in crane operations; knowledge of daily checks and servicing of cranes and associated equipment; and demonstrate knowledge of the documentation for crane operations and equipment maintenance requests.

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Crane Operators who are able to competently use science and technology when applying operation techniquesThe contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. This in turn will enhance the employability and career prospects of learners employed in this sector. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    The operator should be declared physically fit and have completed an eyesight test (such as the Orthorator test, the Purdue University Test No. 3, etc.) and an industry recognised depth perception and hand-eye co-ordination test.

    Resources required to meet operational needs are identified and selected in accordance with company procedures and in accordance with job specifications.

    Apply safe practices in crane operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe crane practices for crane operations are applied in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety legislation, Codes of Practice, Company procedures, and Manufactures Manual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Crane manufacturers' crane rating charts and range diagrams are identified and applied for crane use according to crane manufacturers' requirements and in accordance with Codes of Practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Load charts, range diagrams, crane capacities, safe load indicators.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Carry out specified checks and servicing of cranes and associated equipment.
