PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Demonstrating an integrated practical and theoretical grounding in Crane Operations, inspecting and evaluating lifting gear, preparing and slinging complex loads, as well as communicating during crane operations

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Crane Operators who are able to competently use science and technology when applying operation techniquesThe contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. This in turn will enhance the employability and career prospects of learners employed in this sector. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • NQF Level 2 Numeracy and NQF Level 2 Literacy

    The operator should be declared physically fit and have completed an eyesight test (such as the Orthorator test, the Purdue University Test No. 3, etc.) and an industry recognised depth perception and hand-eye co-ordination test.

    It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit are competent in unit standards which address:

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Complex and irregular loads have the following characteristics:
  • Unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading, irregular shape and proportions, with or without set lifting points.

    Identify and select appropriate lifting equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Weights of various loads are determined, lifting equipment selected, and applicable sling and lifting gear applied to the load in accordance with the relevant Codes of Practice and Company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ropes, chains, web slings, lifting beams, spreader bars, slings, shackles, eye bolts, lifting devices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Packing and dunnage are selected and applied to crane lift situations, in accordance with the relevant Codes of Practice and Company procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect and evaluate lifting gear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lifting gear is inspected and evaluated in accordance with relevant Codes of Practice and Company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    May include, but is not limited to - lifting beams, spreader bars, slings, shackles, eye bolts, natural, synthetic and wire ropes, chains and web slings.

    Prepare and sling complex loads.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Complex loads are prepared and slung in accordance with the relevant Codes of Practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tie appropriate knots in natural or synthetic ropes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Bowline, clove hitch, sheet bend.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors affecting the safe operation of the crane are determined including the effect of weather on this type of operation, lifting equipment selected, and applicable sling and lifting gear applied to the load in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety Act, Codes of Practice and company procedures.

    Communicate during crane operations.

    Hand signals for cranes and lifting appliances are in accordance with recognised practice.
