PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to correctly and safely prepare a machine for the planing of timber products. The person is also able to produce quality products that meet required standards.
The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing materials for machine-planing.
  • Preparing and setting machines to plane timber product components and products.
  • Machining materials to form planed timber product components or products. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in basic numeracy and literacy equivalent to ABET Level 4. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to the National Certificate in Furniture Making, NQF level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Production information is checked for accuracy and sufficiency and any incorrect information is reported to the relevant person 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All necessary materials and equipment for the job are identified and accessed, and any non-availability is reported to the relevant person 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality and quantity of materials is checked and remedial action taken if there is non-conformity

    The compatibility of materials with the machine to be used is accurately established and correct remedial action taken if there is non-conformity

    Prepare and set machines to plane timber product components and products.

    Jigs, templates and other necessary dimension control aids are correct and fit for the purpose

    Correct tooling for the job is fitted and secured correctly

    Correct routine procedures for the planing machine are carried out in accordance to all safety regulations

    All health and safety requirements are adhered to, prior to switching on planing machine

    Where necessary, assistants are in place prior to and during operations

    Planing machinery is started and stopped correctly and safely

    Materials are planed at feed speeds suited to materials and machine

    The use of guards and relevant safety procedures and requirements are maintained throughout the operations
