PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can set up and operate log debarking and conditioning facilities in the wet processing area of the veneer, block board and plywood manufacturing environment, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Assemble all the tools and equipment required to set up and operate the debarking /conditioning facility (Range: cutting tools: hand tools, alignment tools, setting tools and equipment).
  • Set up and test the debarking / conditioning facility (Range: includes repairing / replacing components as prescribed as well as those found to be faulty during set up and testing).
  • Operate the debarking / conditioning facility (Range: Log infeed, debarker unit, log outfeed, waste removal facilities / Loading of Logs, Unloading of Logs).
  • Control the quantity and quality of debarked / conditioned logs processed through the debarker(s) / conditioning facilities.
  • Complete routine maintenance and lubrication schedules of the debarking facility (Range: Hand tools, lubrication and cleaning materials, equipment). 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Wet processing area = logyard, scanner, sorter, conditioning process.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment, which can be described as, the wet processing area of a veneer/plywood/block board plant, including log deck and conditioning area.
  • All personnel involved in the activities of the wet processing area.
  • All material handled and processed in the log debarking and conditioning area.
  • All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures, and regulations relating to log debarking and conditioning of logs.
  • All routine maintenance and lubrication schedules, tools and materials used in the debarking and conditioning facility.
  • All specifications for debarked and conditioned logs.
  • All tools and equipment used for setting up a log debarking and log conditioning facility.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 to set up and operate the log debarking and log conditioning facility of the wet processing area of a veneer/plywood/block board plant.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assemble all the tools and equipment required to set up and operate the debarking /conditioning facility. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Cutting tools: hand tools, alignment tools, setting tools and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct tools and equipment required to set up and operate the debarking / conditioning facility are assembled/brought together as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The assembly of the required tools and equipment proves that the Learner knows and understands the correct setting up and operation procedures for the debarking/conditioning facility. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up and test of the debarking/conditioning facility. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes repairing/replacing components as prescribed as well as those found to be faulty during set up and testing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The debarking/conditioning facility is set up correctly to ensure that the debarked/conditioned logs meet the quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner correctly demonstrates the prescribed set up and testing of the debarking/conditioning facilities as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed set up and testing procedures for the debarking /conditioning facility. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate the debarking/conditioning facility.

    The debarking/conditioning facility is operated correctly which ensures that the debarked/conditioned logs meet the quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner correctly operates the debarking/conditioning facility as prescribed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The successful operation of the debarking/conditioning facility proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Control the quantity and quality of debarked/conditioned logs processed through the debarker(s)/conditioning facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The debarking/conditioning operation is controlled to ensure that a constant throughput of correctly debarked/ conditioned logs meet the production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of controlling the debarking/conditioning operation is carried out in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The Learner controls the operation of the debarking/conditioning facility as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The successful control of the debarking/conditioning facility proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed control procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Complete routine maintenance and lubrication schedules of the debarking facility.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The routine maintenance and lubrication of the debarking /conditioning facility is carried out to ensure that this operation meets the prescribed operational standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct routine maintenance and lubrication schedules are carried out timeously as specified in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The Learner completes the prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct completion of the routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports proves that the Learner knows and understands the purpose of and procedures for maintaining and lubricating the debarking/ conditioning facilities. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • The tools, equipment and procedures required to set up and test a debarking/conditioning facility to prescribed standards.
  • The procedures required to operate a debarking/conditioning facility to prescribed standards.

  • The routine maintenance and lubrication of the debarking/conditioning facility.
  • The measurement and recording of logs processed by the debarking conditioning facility.

  • Assist in training/coaching workers in the work area and discussing with them and the relevant responsible person all aspects of their activities in this work area.
