Learners credited with this unit standard are able to research and apply techniques for application to spatial design. The unit standard contributes to the learning of those who want to develop a career path in the Art, Craft and Design sector, and contributes to greater levels of production and quality in this industry.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication, NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following statements provide a general guide to the scope and complexity of the competence expected of the learner:
  • Spatial design work may include office space planning, set designs, events installation for specific event, and space design for exterior spaces or environments, exhibition design.
  • The brief describes and specifies the work to be completed; is usually prepared by commissioning body or organization; may be written, diagrammatic, visual or verbal.
  • Specifications would be articulated in the brief and may refer to purpose, client needs, dimensions and style.
  • Parameters or constraints may refer to cost, material characteristics, timeframe, legal considerations and technology.
  • Preliminary visual representation may include sketching, plan drawing, sample boards, colour boards, CADD and photographical / digital and multi-media imaging.
  • Workspace needs may include drafting table, lighting and power requirements, electronic equipment, process-specific space needs.
  • Tools and equipment may include hand tools, power tools, lighting equipment, electronic devises and ladders.

    A preliminary visual representation of the brief was produced, which reflects the specifications of the brief.

    Possible approaches to the design are identified and criteria for the selection of the final approach are established, which are in alignment with the desired product

    Tools and equipment are selected for the testing of approaches and techniques which are appropriate

    A range of techniques and materials are tested and experimented with in pursuit for the ideal way to meet the requirements of the brief

    Testing processes are evaluated against selection criteria and the preferred approach is selected, based on the requirements of the brief.
