PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Plumbers to perform basic building works, including brick masonry, plastering, excavation and backfilling, concrete and benching. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. All basic building works are performed according to the following qualitative specifications:
  • SABS1200 series: A General and AA General (Small Works).
  • SABS 0400: 1990 Code of Practice for the Application of the national Building Regulations.

    2. Brickwork is restricted to vertical only, clay or concrete stock and face bricks.

    3. Compaction of concrete includes both hand ramming and vibrating.

    4. Curing of concrete includes covering with a membrane, moist sand and sheeting

    5. Precast elements includes: precast concrete slabs (including cover slabs for drainage pipes laid at shallow depths), reducer slabs, manhole rings, covers and frames, and complete precast manhole chambers.

    6. Tools include those required for pipefitting, concreting, brickwork and plastering.

    Construct brick masonry for manholes and chambers.

    1. Brick masonry work is set out according to site requirements and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Mortar is mixed according to the approved mix design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Brickwork is constructed for the sides of chambers according to specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Brickwork is plastered in accordance with the specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform in-situ concreting and benching.

    1. Excavations are trimmed and prepared for concrete according to the drawings.

    2. Concrete is procured or batched according to requirements.

    3. Concrete is placed, compacted, and cured according to specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Benching is applied according to requirements.

    Install Precast elements.

    1. Structures or excavations are prepared for receiving precast elements according to the specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Joining or waterproofing materials are applied according to site requirements and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Precast elements are installed and connected according to site requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Plumbers. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
