PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to have the background knowledge required to assess a medical risk. It will be useful for underwriters, life claims assessors, reinsurers, medical claims assessors who need to apply knowledge of the reproductive system to assess long term risk.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system.
  • Explaining the main conditions and impairments related to the reproductive system.
  • Interpreting evidence related to reproductive conditions and impairments.
  • Applying knowledge of the reproductive system to assess risk.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is
  • The main conditions of the male reproductive system include, but are not limited to, STDs, prostate, infertility disorders, testicular disorder, erectile dysfunction, vasectomy and sex change.
  • The main conditions of the female reproductive system include, but are not limited to, STDs, infertility disorders, endometriosis, birth defects, miscarriages, difficult pregnancies, sex change.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, pathology reports, blood tests, scopes, x-rays, sonar, specialist reports and reports on specific procedures.
  • Risk factors include, but are not limited to, medical, lifestyle, occupation and avocation risks.

    Explain the main conditions and impairments related to the reproductive system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main conditions of the male reproductive system are identified and an indication is given of the symptoms, treatment, prognosis and impairment related to each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The main conditions of the female reproductive system are identified and an indication is given of the symptoms, treatment, prognosis and impairment related to each. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interpret evidence related to reproductive system conditions and impairments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Objective medical evidence of reproductive system related impairments is identified and an indication is given of when and why each type of evidence is required to support an assessment decision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Medical evidence is interpreted in order to make an assessment decision and indication is given of when it is necessary to refer evidence to the next level of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of wrong or inappropriate decisions in assessing long term risk are explained from the point of view of the underwriter, claims assessor, insurer and the client.

    Apply knowledge of the reproductive system to assess risk.

    The risk factors in a male reproductive system case study are analysed to determine the risk and a reproductive system related assessment decision is substantiated using appropriate evidence.

    The risk factors in a female reproductive system case study are analysed to determine the risk and a reproductive system related assessment decision is substantiated using appropriate evidence.
