PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to have the background knowledge required to assess a long term medical risk. It will be useful for underwriters, life claims assessors, reinsurers, medical claims assessors who need to apply knowledge of the neurological impairments to assess long term risk.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system.
  • Explaining the main conditions and impairments related to the central nervous system.
  • Interpreting evidence related to neurological conditions and impairments.
  • Applying knowledge of the central nervous system to assess risk.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is
  • The main conditions of the central nervous system include, but are not limited to, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, neuron disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral vascular accident (CVA), quadriplegia, paraplegia and peripheral neuropathy.
  • Evidence includes, but is not limited to, neurologist, occupational therapy, physician's and neurosurgeon reports.
  • Risk factors include, but are not limited to, medical, lifestyle, occupation and avocation risks.

    Explain the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system.

    The main components of the brain are identified and an indication is given of the role of each component in the central nervous system.

    The main components of the spine are identified and an indication is given of the role of each component in the central nervous system.

    The relationship between the nerves and muscles is explained with examples.

    Explain the main conditions and impairments related to the central nervous system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main conditions of the central nervous system are identified and an indication is given of the symptoms, treatment, prognosis and impairment related to each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of neurological impairments on lifestyle and occupation is explained with examples.

    Interpret evidence related to neurological conditions and impairments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Objective medical evidence of neurological related impairments is identified and an indication is given of when and why each type of evidence is required to support an assessment decision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Medical evidence is interpreted in order to make an assessment decision and indication is given of when it is necessary to refer evidence to the next level of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of wrong or inappropriate decisions in assessing long term risk are explained from the point of view of the underwriter, claims assessor, insurer and the client.

    Apply knowledge of the central nervous system to assess risk.
