PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining Geographical Information System (GIS) skills for use in a surveying environment leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to capture spatial data in the field for GIS using single-phase GNSS technology in any working environment.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Display a knowledge and understanding relating to the capturing of spatial data for GIS.
  • Plan and prepare for the capture of spatial data in the field using a single phase GNSS.
  • Capture spatial data in the field for GIS.
  • Complete the work sequence in accordance with the standards and requirements for the task.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    NQF level 4 numeracy and literacy, computer literacy, the ability to read a map or plan, obtain information from a map or plan and operate a single-phase GNSS instrument will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard.

    Plan and prepare for the capture of spatial data in the field using a single phase GNSS.

    1. Theory and principles associated with vector data structures are understood and explained in accordance with task specific GIS standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Tools, equipment and instruments required for the task are verified for use in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal protective equipment is verified for use in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Permission to enter the work place, if necessary, is obtained in accordance with task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. All relevant information for the capturing of spatial data is obtained in accordance with task requirements and job instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Workplace hazards and sub-standard conditions are explained and, if found during examination, dealt with in accordance with task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    1. Theory and principles associated with single phase (handheld) GNSS is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Work related hazards and associated risks are explained, and if found, dealt with in accordance with legal and task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal protective equipment is used throughout in accordance with manufacturers' specifications. The consequences of non-compliance are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Features are located and identified in accordance with the job instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Features and attribute data are recorded in accordance with task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Communicated instructions are interpreted and responded to in accordance with task specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Communicated instructions include instructions by means of hand signals, verbal communication, radio transmission, cellular phones.

    Evidence is required of hand signals and any one other communication method.

    5. Reporting requirements are dealt with in accordance with managerial instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    4. Anyone wishing to become an assessor or provider of learning must provide an affordable assessment / learning service.
