In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement within social and economic transformation by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able
to design GNSS/GPS assisted photography.

A qualifying learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Design position of all flight lines including cross strips for GPS/GNSS photography.
  • Determine positioning of ground control points and accuracy of X Y Z fixes.
  • Site GPS / GNSS base station and survey the required position to necessary accuracy in X Y Z.
  • Determine time interval between GPS / GNSS fixes required for project specific requirements.
  • Establish offset between antenna and projection centre of aerial camera.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
NQF level 5 Mathematics and Communication and the attainment of the following unit standards is essential for understanding and proficiency in acquiring this standard.

Plan and execute a survey using GPS/GNSS and plan execute and analyse the survey of points using GPS/GNSS.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necessary.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Design position of flight lines including cross strips for GPS/GNSS photography.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Number and position of cross strips required are determined taking into account the scale of photography required in accordance with task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Base maps of the area to be flown and aerial triangulated are acquired and the determined positions indicated thereon showing Start and End of each strip. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Determine the position of ground control points and accuracy of X Y Z fixes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The positions of ground control points (either pre-marked points or post-photography identified points) are determined in accordance with task specific requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The positions of the ground control points are indicated on the base map or geographical co-ordinates computed for the field surveyor to locate required position. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Positioning of surplus ground control points for quality control is identified in accordance with task requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. All ground control points to be fixed in X Y and Z to task specific accuracy. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Site GPS/GNSS base station and survey the required position to necessary accuracy in X Y Z.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. GNSS/GPS Base station is established. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The position of the area to be flown in relation to the aircraft's take-off base station is determined. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. GNSS/GPS Base station as established will need to be fixed in X Y and Y to the required accuracy, or the relevant co-ordinates and elevation will have to be obtained if an active base station. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Determine time interval between GPS/GNSS fixes required for project specific requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The time interval at which GNSS/GPS fixes of the airborne antenna are to be recorded is determined in accordance with task specific accuracy requirements. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The time interval chosen must correlate with that recorded at the base station. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Establish offsets between antenna and projection centre of aerial camera.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Establish the relative positions between the GNNS/GPS antenna mounted on top of fuselage of aircraft and the projection centre of the lens of the aerial camera as mounted in the aircraft. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. If relative positions have not been determined, carry out the required survey and/or computation. The consequences of non-compliance are explained.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
