PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform plumbing functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Understanding and describing basic plumbing principles and carrying out under the close supervision of a qualified plumber the assembly and maintenance of components for above and below ground drainage systems as well as water supply systems.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction ".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 3. English literacy and numeracy.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Water pipes include but are not limited to: galvanised mild steel (GMS), unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), copper, and polypropylene.
  • Joining of pipes include but are not limited to: the cutting and threading of galvanised pipes, the joining of similar pipes such as copper, PVC, and the joining of dissimilar pipe types.
  • Installation of water pipes includes but is not limited to: both above and below ground, lagging, and the provision of hose reels.
  • Fittings include: cocks, valves, taps, full way valves, house water stations, thermostatic valves, flushing valves, control valves, pressure reducing valves, mixers, water meters, expansion leaf valves, etc.
  • Sewer and drainpipes include: uPVC, HDPE, reinforced concrete, earthenware (Vitrified clay), and fibre reinforced cement.
  • Trench excavations include for battering of side slopes in non-cohesive soils, and for shoring.
  • Cleaning of sewer and drainpipes includes rodding, and jetting.
  • Manholes include the use of concrete cast in-situ and precast, brick masonry, precast concrete rings, and prefabricated manholes.
  • Soil and waste water pipes include: uPVC, galvanised (GMS), cast iron.
  • Vertical pipes are fitted plumb, horizontal pipes are installed to specified falls.
  • Soil pipes include built-in, and suspended pipes and are secured using holder bats.
  • Soil fittings include: holder bats, reducers, tees, bends, etc
  • Waste water fixtures include: sinks, baths, jetted baths (spa baths), bidets, wash-hand basins, showers, wash troughs, salad bowls, grease traps, floor drains, and food waste disposers.
  • Sanitary fittings include: water closet pans (wall-hung and pedestal), urinals (stall and wall-hung).

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA for this unit standard or a similar unit standard at a higher NQF Level.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA-ETQA.
  • CETA-ETQA or other ETQA's who have a Memorandum of Understanding in place with CETA-ETQA would be responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
