PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform tiling functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and using tools, materials and protective equipment for tiling, preparing surfaces for tiling, applying tiles to plastered surfaces and plastering walls and columns. In addition to the above the qualifying learner will be able to prepare floors and apply screeds to floors and steps as well as repair cracked and damaged plaster.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Learners will perform the basic tasks listed in this unit standard under supervision.
  • Materials include but are not limited to: Tiles, adhesives, grout, sand, cementitious materials, lime, bonding agents, additives and water.
  • Surfaces include but are not limited to: Entire walls, ceilings, floors, beams, columns, door and window openings.
  • Internal and external corners are to be tiled such that they are square and joints are in line and evenly spaced.
  • Tiles include but are not limited to: Ceramic, glazed, unglazed, concrete, terrazzo, porcelain, different sizes and thickness, bevelled and unbevelled.
  • Tile adhesives and grouts include but are not limited to: Cement based and non-cement based.
  • Tools include but are not limited to: Steel and wood floats, trowels, wheelbarrows, buckets, mortar boards, hammers, spirit levels, plumb bobs, squares, screeding bards, nylon line, dumpy level, mallets, tile cutters and pliers.

    Tiling tools are used and maintained in accordance with Health and Safety and housekeeping procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare surfaces for tiling.

    An appropriate area is identified for batching of tiles, adhesive and grout with due regard to proximity and transport to work area.

    Protrusions are removed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Surface defects and cracks are identified and corrected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Levels and lines are corrected to be true and plumb.

    Existing surfaces and built-in items are identified and protected against damage.

    Dust and dirt are removed and surfaces are dampened where necessary.

    Tiles, adhesives and grout are batched according to instructions and specific work requirements.

    Plaster screed is applied to entire wall surfaces, according to line, level and specification thickness tolerances.

    Plaster screed is applied to column surfaces, according to line, level and specification thickness tolerances.

    Completed works are measured. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Prepare floors and apply screeds to floors and steps.

    A sand (levelling) screed is mixed and applied to a concrete floor.

    Concrete steps are screeded.

    A completed surface is covered or allowed to cure slowly by applying water.

    Completed surfaces are protected from damage.

    A roughcast plaster wall is repaired to match existing plaster finish. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA for this unit standard or a similar unit standard at a higher NQF Level.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA-ETQA.
  • CETA-ETQA or other ETQA's who have a Memorandum of Understanding in place with CETA-ETQA would be responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
