PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform painting functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and using tools, materials and protective equipment for painting, preparing and priming previously coated surfaces prime new surfaces as well as painting surfaces.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy. 
    		•

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Surfaces include but are not limited to: New, absorbent, non-absorbent, rough, smooth, poor and damaged surfaces.
  • Bare metal areas are spot primed with appropriate primer.
  • Rust is sanded down to bare metal.
  • Bare areas on PVC surfaces being repainted is sanded down with water sandpaper.
  • Floors are etch primed, and PVC surfaces being repainted are primed with etching primer.
  • Previously coated surfaces are stripped by applying heat, chemicals, by sanding or scraping the surface.
  • Imperfections include nail head holes, cracks, crevices and bare areas.
  • Protruding objects or contaminating agents are sanded down, removed, scraped and sunk.
  • Contaminating agents include but are not limited to: Loose or flaking paint or varnish, loose mortar in joints, shutter release agents, help, grease, oil patches, flux, green discoloration (copper pipes), mortar lumps (floors), debris, rust, old wall paper and adhesive traces.
  • Previously painted and galvanised surfaces are washed with appropriate surface removers and rinsed with clean water.
  • Coating includes but is not limited to: Paint and varnish.
  • Finishing includes but is not limited to: The use of lime wash, polyurethane, cellulose and two-pack epoxy materials.
  • Thickness of coat application is per manufacturer specification.
