This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to lift and move loads on a construction site and places emphasis on the correct slinging and lifting of loads.

    Explain the factors critical to lifting and moving loads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of the operation, selection, examination and use of lifting equipment and attachments to lift and move a load are explained in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of lifting and moving loads is explained, showing a clear understanding of the direct consequences to self, others and the business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Injury to persons, damage to equipment, loss of production time through breakdowns and increased costs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible critical hazards and substandard conditions that may be encountered while lifting and moving the load in a particular context are explained, as well as how to deal with them so as to be consistent with accepted best practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to lift and move a load. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the workplace is obtained in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools, material and equipment that are required for lifting and moving a load are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The lifting equipment is inspected in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The workplace is examined in accordance with specified requirements and any hazardous and substandard conditions are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The mass of the load to be lifted is verified in accordance with company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of inadequate preparation for the lifting and moving of the load are explained in terms of health, safety and production. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used so that the safety of persons and equipment is protected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suspension, as well as the attachment points required for lifting and moving the load is examined and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The load is lifted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The load is moved and positioned in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work-related hazards are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. Risks associated with lifting and moving loads are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Interpersonal interaction is positive, promotes effective teamwork, and avoids dysfunctional conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The tools and equipment are used in accordance with manufacturer design and without injury to self and others.

    The consequences for health, safety and production of not lifting and moving the load in line with specified requirements and current legislation are explained.

    The workplace is ensured to be clean and free of hazards in accordance with specified requirements and good housekeeping practices.

    The consequences of not making the load available for production purposes is explained in terms of health, safety and production.

    Tools, material and equipment, good housekeeping practices and reporting.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
