PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of installing automotive components to restore system operational condition. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under the supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Learner has learned to plan and prepare automotive component installation. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment, clean component mounting areas prior to installation.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Component includes: Any contraption, consisting of more than one part working together, which have a name, function/s and an operation description, and forms part of any one or more of the following system/s: Electrical, engine, drive train, brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics.
