PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners and practitioners interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a strategy/programme using appropriate measuring techniques and procedures. The rationale for this unit standard is based on the importance of creating and maintaining a safe society, especially in terms of contributions to improving safety in society by building and confirming knowledge regarding crime and victimisation.

This unit standard is designed to acquire knowledge regarding evaluating the effectiveness of strategies/programmes in the field of crime and victimisation including:
  • Identifying existing criteria to determine the effectiveness of the strategy/programme.
  • Determining the applicability of the strategy/programme.
  • Evaluating the outcomes of the strategy/programme.

    Learners become aware of the importance of reflecting and exploring a range of strategies to learn more effectively as they identify various factors that increase or influence crime and victimisation risk. They learn to participate as responsible citizens in the life of local, national and global communities, by identifying and address factors contributing to crime and victimisation. They learn the importance of being culturally sensitive across a range of social contexts in relating to all participants when identifying factors contributing to crime and victimisation on an individual, social and corporate level. The attaining of these outcomes will also contribute to the development of learners' entrepreneurial skills within the field.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Criteria refer to the use of specific techniques to measure the effectiveness and/or deficiencies of a crime and victimisation strategy/programme.
  • Strategy/programme refers to methods applied to and focusing on specific crime.victimisation risks and processes relating to youth, adults, corporations and the social and physical environment.
  • Programme/strategy purpose can include victims and offender support/service, reduction/prevention of crime and victimisation, education and training in the field of crime and victimisation, restorative justice, rehabilitation, reintegration, punishment and sentencing.
  • Crime and victimisation risk include any factor compromising safety and security at the individual, social, economic, corporate and physical environment level.
