Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to apply the safety precautions to various firearms within the Firearms Maintenance Industry.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the reasons for performing safety precautions when maintaining firearms.
  • Perform safety procedures when maintaining different types of firearms.
  • Take corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified during maintenance.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the cycle of operation of firearms.

    It is assumed that the learner embarking on study towards this unit standard will have the following:
  • Communication skills at NQF level 3.

    Reasons for adhering to safety precautions in workshop conditions are explained in terms of to organisational safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for adhering to safety precautions at firearm testing facilities are explained in terms of to safety requirements of the testing facility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons for adhering to safety precautions when maintaining firearms are explained in terms of to organisational safety requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform safety procedures according to manufacturers requirements when maintaining different types of firearms.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety procedures applicable to firearm maintenance are explained in terms of maintenance of a specific type of firearm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The phrase "specific type of firearm" refers to pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, light machine guns, sub machine gun and machine pistols and manually operated rifles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety procedures applicable to firearm maintenance are adhered to when maintaining a specific type of firearm. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Learners must demonstrate this competence in the maintenance of the following types of firearms: pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, light machine guns, sub machine gun and machine pistols and manually operated rifles.

    Take corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified during firearm maintenance.

    Unsafe conditions and identified defects are reported to ensure adherence to safety procedures when maintaining firearms.

    The cycle of operations of firearms relates to the basic operating principles of all firearms.

    Loading and feeding operations are identified and their mechanical operations are explained in relation to the maintenance of firearms.

    Cocking and firing operations are identified and their mechanical operations are explained in relation to the maintenance of firearms.

    Locking and unlocking operations are identified and their mechanical operations are explained in relation to the maintenance of firearms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Extracting and ejecting operations are identified and their mechanical operations are explained in relation to the maintenance of firearms.
