PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has its core purpose, qualifying learners with the foundational knowledge required to work with small arms ammunition. It constitutes the basic knowledge that is required to work with small arms ammunition.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the various identified components of ammunition.
  • Explain the identified marking systems as well as the calibres of ammunition.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the handling and storage of ammunition according to safety procedures.
  • Identify defective ammunition in order to report such defects to avoid unsafe conditions.

    It is assumed that the learner embarking on study towards this unit standard will have the following:
  • Communication skills at NQF level 3.
