PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology field.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Design and apply modifications to existing process control systems within the Measurement, Control and Instrumentation field in accordance with industry norms.

    This unit standard will contribute to the qualitative development of learners by providing progression to this NQF level within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment. Recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology is accommodated for. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and development within the economic sector. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • An understanding of the industrial hierarchical network structure in conjunction with a control system and various communication protocols.
  • An understanding of control theory; and
  • An understanding of the theoretical principles of project management. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Type of process control systems used includes but is not limited to:
    > Analogue and Digital systemsThe range of control networks includes industrial networks e.g ETHERNET, profibus, RS485 and HART.
  • Safety precautions include the use of personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection, process isolation.
  • Requirements include but are not limited to Statutory requirements, National Standards and manufacturers' specifications.

    Relevant documentation is identified and retrieved in accordance with design requirements and company policies and procedures.

    Engineering drawings are understood in accordance with engineering standards.

    Drawings are amended correctly to reflect the design.
