PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who need to use a variety of maps and other spatial sources in the course of their work. It will be useful for Estate Agents, Archaeologists, planners and implementers of land reform, government departments, development practitioners and enforcement agents and learners in travel and tourism.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting sources of spatial information for specific investigations or situations.
  • Analysing spatial information from selected sources.
  • Synthesising information relevant to specific investigations.
  • Reporting the findings of investigations based on spatial sources.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Information from a variety of maps, and photographic images.
  • The National Mapping Series including, but not limited to 1:10 000 orthophoto maps, 1:50 000 topographic maps, 1:250 000 topo-cadastral maps, 1:500 000 topo-admin edition, 1:2 000 000 wall map and provincial maps.
  • The Aeronautical edition (ICOA symbols) including; 1:1 000 000 world aeronautical chart (ICAO), 1:1 000 000 South Africa (4 sheets), 1:2 000 000 South Africa (2002 Edition), 1:2 500 000 topographical (Southern Africa), 1:2 500 000 magisterial districts and provinces (South Africa), Provincial Map, South Africa, maps of the Regional Series (various scales).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maps and other sources of spatial information are identified and evaluated in terms of their potential use in investigations or situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources include, but are not limited to, maps, orthophotos, graphs, digital maps, satellite images, photographs, oral histories and indigenous knowledge systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate sources are accessed for specific investigations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources include, but are not limited to, the national map organisations, Internet, street guides, Government Departments, libraries and map collections.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant sources are evaluated and selected with reference to the stated goals of projects or investigations.

    Analyse spatial information from selected sources.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Spatial information from a variety of sources is analysed and documented with reference to the goals of a project or investigation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Analysis includes, but is not limited to, bearing, distance, area, topography, scale, orientation, settlement patterns, land use changes in patterns and land use, climatic information, hazards, networks and nodes, location and boundaries.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Qualitative information is interpreted and substantiated from spatial sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Quantitative information is obtained by enumeration and measurement. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Synthesise information relevant to specific investigations or situations.

    Spatial information from a variety of sources is compared to establish cause and effect, change over time and impact on the investigation or situation.

    Anomalies in information are identified and explained for specific investigations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Additional information required to achieve the goals of an investigation or validate a hypothesis is identified and accessed in order to complete an investigation.

    All relevant information is synthesised to provide an overview of the findings.

    Report the findings of investigations based on spatial sources.
