PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard intended for learners who deal with transportation insurance which is a highly specialised class of business in Short Term Insurance. It will be useful for learners in transporters, road haulage, household removals, removals, clearing and forwarding agents, forwarding agents, courier companies.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the transportation risk in a selected consignment of goods.
  • Describing different types of packaging and the associated risk.
  • Analysing a transportation policy document and producing related documentation.
  • Explaining why insurance on a consignment may be restricted in certain areas. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Methods of conveying bulk goods include road, rail, air, sea/waterway and pipeline.
  • All types of vessel, vehicle and aircraft used to transport goods over short and long distances, locally, nationally and internationally.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse the transportation risk in a selected consignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The goods in a specific consignment are analysed and classified in terms of whether they are fragile, non-fragile, hazardous, perishable, target goods or pilferable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The transport risk associated with each class of goods is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The risks associated with the origin, destination and route are analysed for a selected consignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The risks associated with storage and shipment are analysed for a specific consignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An atlas is used to identify transportation risks for a particular consignment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe different types of packaging and the associated risks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of conveying bulk goods are explained and an indication is given of the associated risk. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ways of conveying break bulk goods are identified and an indication is given of why goods may be transported in this way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different types of shipping container are identified and an indication is given of when each is appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The advantages and disadvantages of different types of packaging are explained with reference to different commodities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse a transportation policy document and produce related documentation.

    A policy document is analysed to determine the terms and conditions, financial limits and relevance for a specific consignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required insurance documents are completed for a specific consignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences if documentation is completed incorrectly are explained for domestic and international transportation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain why insurance on a consignment may be restricted in certain areas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Places where cover is restricted on account of war or unrest are identified and an indication is given of why the restriction currently applies to each place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The affect of infrastructure and security on the availability of cover is explained with examples.
